Oh-oh... I blew it

You may know that I provide technology services as part of my strategic business consulting. While working with one of my clients recently, I was responsible for a new phone system installation. I had a couple of service providers doing the work, and it didn't go well. In fact, it went really bad. Ouch.

Bugs in the software, vendors bending the truth a bit, service providers not owning their own stuff...

But, the bottom line is that it didn't work.

What was I going to do?

I felt terrible. I am committed to creating value and getting the job done with excellence. That didn't happen.

Intermittent problems with phones are ugly.

What was I going to do?

First, I needed to fix the people problem with the service providers and vendors.

Then, I needed to own that it was my responsibility to get the job done... and I hadn't done that.

That meant discussing the issues with the staff and management and letting them know that I owned the problem... and the solution. And that's what I did, even though it's never easy to admit that the choices I made didn't work out the way that I had planned. No excuses, though.

The good news is that I've learned some stuff. We'll talk about some of those things in the next newsletter.

Although it's hard to own your mistakes, it is also very empowering. You realize that you are in control of a lot, and if you take responsibility, you can enjoy the successes even more. You can't treat your successes and failures differently. You can't be responsible for one and not the other.
